Script Menu Tab

The Script Menu tab contains tools for writing and testing scripts.


This section contains tools to copy, cut, and paste instances or lines of code.

Icon Action Description
Paste Creates a copy of the copied/cut instance(s) or lines of code in the clipboard and pastes them in the selected object.
Cut Copies the selected instance(s) or lines of code to the clipboard and deletes the originals.
Copy Copies the selected instance(s) or lines of code to the clipboard.


This section lets you quickly jump between any open script.

Icon Action Description
Back Navigates to the previous open script.
Fwd Navigates to the next open script.


This section lets you search and edit any part of the script, as well as select instances within the Explorer window for bulk actions.

Find Opens a pop-up menu with the following tools:
  • Find — Locates all instances of your input in the script.
  • Find Next — Locates the next match found in the "Find" widget.
  • Find Previous — Locates the previous match found in the "Find" widget.
  • Find All — Locates all instances of your input within a place, even outside of the currently selected script.
  • Go to line — Navigates to a specific line within the script.
  • Quick Open — Searches all instances in the Explorer window.
  • Quick Open Actions — Searches all Studio actions.
  • Open Script Function Filter — Searches all functions within the active script and its required module scripts.
Replace Lets you replace one (or all) matches in a script with a new string.
Select Opens a pop-up menu with the following tools:
  • Select All — Selects all contents of a script.
  • Select Children — Selects all descendants of a selected instance in the Explorer window.


This section lets you format either sections or the entirety of the script for readability.

Icon Action Description
Format Selection Formats the selected script with proper layout and indentation. The dropdown lets you select the Format Document tool which formats the entire script regardless of the current selection.

Play / Play Here / Run Starts simulating the game in three possible modes which can be toggled by the small arrow below the icon:
  • Play — Starts simulating the game and inserts your character at a SpawnLocation or around position 0, 140, 0. This mode simulates both the articles/Roblox Client Server Model|client and server.
  • Play Here — Starts simulating the game from the point you're currently viewing in the game editor window. This mode simulates both the articles/Roblox Client Server Model|client and server.
  • Run — Starts simulating the game without inserting your character. This mode only simulates the articles/Roblox Client Server Model|server.
Client/Server During playtesting in a "play solo" mode (Play or Play Here), toggles between client mode and server mode. See Articles/game testing|Game Testing for details.
Pause Pauses the simulation of the game running but does not reset the state. Pressing Play, Play Here, or Run will resume the simulation.
Resume Resumes the playtest, if paused.
Stop Stops simulation of the game and resets all BasePart|Parts and Instance|Instances to how they were before Play, Play Here, or Run was pressed.


This section lets you control the debugger. For more information on the following actions, see articles/Debugging|Debugging Tools.

Icon Action Description
Step Into Moves the debugger into the function on the current line. If there is no function on the current line, the debugger moves to the next line.
Step Over Moves the debugger to the next line of code, not moving into functions.
Step Out Moves the debugger out of the current function and to the next line of code after the function was initially called. If the current line is not inside a function, the debugger moves to the next line.
Add Watch Tells the debugger to "watch" variables, keeping track of their value when you hit breakpoints.

Debug Errors

This section lets you treat script errors as impromptu breakpoints.

Icon Action Description
Never Disable impromptu script debugging.
On All Exceptions Flag all errors, even those occurring within pcall.
On Unhandled Exceptions Only flag errors that occur in unprotected mode; errors occurring within pcall will be ignored.


Icon Action Description
Go to Script Error Navigates the cursor to the first instance of an error within your script.
Reload Script Applies any changes that have been made to a script to the active playtest. The changes are not saved to the script outside of the playtest unless your Studio settings are set to auto-save runtime script changes or you confirm to save the changes upon stopping the playtest. This action is only available while playtesting.
Commit Commits any changes to the script so the updated script is available to other developers within your team. This action is only available during articles/Team Create|Team Create sessions.
Toggle Comment Toggles whether a line of script is a comment or not.
Expand All Folds Expands all collapsed folds in the script.
Collapse All Folds Collapses all foldable sections of the script.
