Colors and Materials
Colors and Materials
Game developers use props, narrative, sound, and color to create a theme for their games. Theming sets the place and mood for your game. For example, if your obby is space themed, all of the parts might be colored and shaped like asteroids. If it’s unicorn themed, maybe the parts are purple, pink, and blue.
What colors would you use to create the following settings?
- A lush jungle
- A haunted house
- A unicorn ranch on the moon
Plan Your Theme
- Think of a theme that you’re excited about and write it on paper.
- Write down at least 3 colors and 3 objects that match the theme.
For example: a space theme may have:
- Colors: Blue, purple, black
- Objects: UFO’s, spaceships, planets
Changing a Part’s Color and Material
Now that you have a theme, you can start changing your obby to match that vision.
- Select the part.
- In the Model tab, click the arrow under Color.
- Click on a color hexagon.
Selecting a part and clicking the color button will change the part to the current color setting.

Change a Part’s Material
Materials are different textures, such as grass, wood, or metal. They can be combined with the color property to make unique combinations like neon blue grass.
- Select the part.
- Click the arrow beneath Material to select a material.

Duplicating Parts
A quick way to build is to copy a part and slightly change it. This gives your obby some variety but also saves you time and steps.
To duplicate a part:
- Select the part.
- Right-click and select Duplicate from the drop-down menu.
Select Multiple Parts
You can select multiple parts at once and change something about all of them, such as a material, or even move them together.
- Hold down Ctrl on your keyboard while selecting parts in the Explorer or in the window showing your game.
- Change the material or color for your selected parts
