Animations and Feedback

Before learning to create an animation, take a moment to think about how animations and player feedback are connected.

Without Feedback

Imagine an adventure game where you fight monsters. In the video below, after hitting a monster nothing happens. The game looks broken, but after a few hits, the monster actually drops a treasure.

The lack of reaction from the monster is what confuses players and makes them think the game is broken. Whenever players take an action, they expect to get feedback in the form of a reaction.

With Feedback

Animations can be used to give players the feedback they’re expecting. In this case, the monster jumps back when hit, and players are no longer confused.
