Part Colors and Materials

5 min

In the articles/Creating Your First Game|Making a Basic Platformer tutorial, you learned the basics of Roblox Studio and you designed a basic obstacle course. In this tutorial, you’ll explore theming through part colors and materials.

Changing How Parts Look

Both the color and material of parts can be changed with a couple clicks.

Change the Color

  1. First, select the Model tab. This shows you the most important buttons and options for working with parts.
  1. Select any part in your game.
  2. Click the small arrow below the Color icon.
  1. Select a color from the color picker such as “Electric blue.”

Change the Material

Changing the material of a part is similar to changing its color:

  1. Click the small arrow below the Material icon.
  1. Select one of the included materials such as “Ice.”
Changing Multiple Parts

You can change an aspect of multiple parts as follows:

  1. Hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command ⌘ (Mac) while clicking on multiple parts in the Explorer or game editor.
  2. Choose another color or material as shown above.

Object Properties

The Properties window lets you see (and change) many things about a part — in fact, some things can only be changed this way.

  1. If it’s not already open, bring up the Properties window by selecting the View tab and clicking the Properties button:
  1. Select the same part you were working with above.
  2. Look at the Properties window. At the top, you’ll see something like this:

Change the Transparency

Transparency works on a scale of 0 to 1. A value of 0 makes the part totally opaque and a value of 1 makes it totally transparent (invisible).

  1. In the Properties window, click on the Transparency row.
  1. Type a number like 0.5 for the value, or use the slider to set a value.

Setting a Custom Color

You’re not limited to the color choices in the Roblox color picker — you can easily make a part whatever color you imagine.

  1. In the Properties window, click the small colored box in the Color row.
  1. This will bring up a color picker that allows you to choose any color, far beyond the normal choices.
  2. As you test different colors, the part color should change in the game editor window:
