Game Theming – Coloring Parts

Game Theming – Coloring Parts

Jun 14 2019, 2:16 PM PST 5 min

In the Making Your Own Obby Game tutorial, you learned the basics of using Roblox Studio and you designed a basic obby. In this tutorial, you’ll explore design theming for games.

Theming often begins with picking out colors for a game. What colors would you use to create the following settings?

  • A sunny day at the park
  • A volcano about to explode
  • A unicorn ranch on the moon

Design of game parts should match your overall theme. For instance, if your game is volcano themed, all of the parts might be colored dark red or grey. If it’s unicorn themed, the parts may be purple, pink, and blue.

Changing How Parts Look

Both the color and material of parts can be changed with a couple clicks.

Change the Color

  1. First, select the Model tab. This shows you the most important buttons and options for working with parts.
  1. Select any part in your game.

  2. Click the small arrow below the Color icon.

  1. Select a color from the Roblox color picker. “Electric blue” is a cool color for this part.

Change the Material

Changing the material of a part is similar to changing its color:

  1. Select the part.

  2. Click the small arrow below the Material icon.

  1. Select one of the included materials.

Object Properties

The Properties window lets you see (and change) many things about a part — in fact, some things can only be changed this way.

  1. If it’s not already open, bring up the Properties window by selecting the View tab and clicking the Properties button:
  1. In your obby, select any part.

  2. Now look at the Properties window. At the top, you’ll see something like this:

Change the Transparency

Transparency works on a scale of 0 to 1. A value of 0 makes the part totally solid and a value of 1 makes it totally transparent (invisible).

  1. Select any part.

  2. In the Properties window, click on the Transparency row.

  1. Type a number like 0.5 for the value, or use the slider to set a value.

Setting a Custom Color

You’re not limited to the color choices in the Roblox color picker! Let’s explore how to make a part any color you can imagine.

  1. In the Properties window, click the small colored box in the Color row.
  1. This will bring up a color picker that allows you to choose any color, far beyond the normal choices.
  2. As you test different colors, the part color should change in the game editor window.

Awesome! Now you know how to change the color and appearance of parts in Roblox.
